Micro Knights, read closely
01The chronicle opens
ntered into the roll on 25 February 2020, Micro Knights is a seven-reel, seven-row cascading pokie from ELK Studios, the Swedish house known for building slots with more moving parts than most. This one is dressed as a storybook battlefield seen from above.
It abandons paylines entirely. Symbols land on a big 7×7 board, matches clear, and new symbols avalanche down — a cluster-and-cascade engine rather than the medieval reel-spinner the name might suggest.
02Theme and atmosphere
The charge is a whimsical siege: a moustachioed knight guards the board from the left, catapult-firing marshals sit at the corners, and a purple dragon coils around a little white tower at the bottom. The symbols are archery targets, meat, mushrooms, wells, rabbits, frogs and a golden crown.
A tall coloured meter runs up the right edge under a 'Flag Release' banner — the energy-collection gauge that drives the features. It is bright, busy and charming, closer to a mobile puzzle game than a solemn medieval chronicle.
03How the game is played
Wins form as clusters on the board and then cascade. In my run at a €1.00 bet the pays came in small and often — €1.80 on one busy cascade, then a scatter of €0.40 and €0.30 hits as symbols cleared and refilled.
The little numbered tokens along the bottom of the board are the muster of catapult knights charging the meter; each match feeds the 'Flag Release' gauge on the right toward the feature.
04Bonus features
The pool lists a proper ELK toolkit: an Avalanche engine, a Bonus Game, an energy Symbols Collection, a Mega Symbol up to 3×3, and Random Wilds. The mechanic ties together — cascades feed the Flag Release meter, and filling it releases wilds and extra symbols onto the board.
ELK's trademark Betting Strategies are also flagged, letting you set optimisers that adjust the stake automatically as you play. It is worth understanding what those actually do to your bankroll before you switch one on, since they change your bet size, not your odds.
05RTP, volatility and max win
The pool lists the return at 96%, a hair under the common benchmark, and flags an RTP range — so an operator may run a lower configuration, worth a check in the panel wherever you play. Volatility is marked medium-high.
The top prize is listed at 2,500× stake. That is a modest ceiling for a high-ish volatility grid game, which tells you the wins come from grinding cascades and the meter rather than one screen-filling explosion.
06Who it suits
This suits players who like cluster-and-cascade boards, an energy meter to chase, and a lighter, more playful skin than the usual castle fare. The ELK polish is all here.
If you want classic reels, big single-line hits or a straightforward free-spins trigger, this puzzle-board approach may frustrate. Whatever you choose, set a limit before you muster in — and be wary of letting a Betting Strategy spend faster than you meant to. 07In short
A charming, well-built ELK cascade game that swaps reels for a tower-defence board and an energy meter. The 2,500× ceiling is modest and the 96% return sits just under benchmark, but the mechanic is genuinely fun to watch.
The rule bank
Rules of the game
Grid
A seven-by-seven board. Wins form as clusters of matching symbols rather than on paylines, so there are no fixed lines to track.
Avalanche
Winning clusters clear and new symbols cascade down to fill the gaps, giving repeated chances from a single paid spin.
Flag Release meter
The coloured gauge on the right charges as you collect energy from cascades; filling it releases the game's wilds and extra symbols onto the board.
Mega Symbol and Random Wilds
The pool lists a Mega Symbol up to 3×3 and Random Wilds among the features, both of which drop into the board to build bigger clusters.
Betting Strategies
ELK's optional optimisers can adjust your stake automatically as you play. They change your bet size, not the maths — understand them before switching one on.

The symbols
Paytable
| Charge | Rank | Value read (€1.00 bet) |
|---|---|---|
| Best cascade (my run) | cluster win | €1.80 (about 1.8x the €1.00 bet) |
| Smaller cascades | cluster win | €0.40 and €0.30 (about 0.4x and 0.3x bet) |
| Golden crown | premium symbol | see in-game paytable |
| Archery target / meat / well | high | see in-game paytable |
| Rabbit / frog / mushroom | low | see in-game paytable |
This is a cluster board with no per-symbol pay panel shown in my run, so the only real numbers are the cascade wins the game paid me at a €1.00 bet: €1.80 on the best cascade, then smaller €0.40 and €0.30 hits. Individual symbol values were not displayed and are entered after the session.
