Marnie keeps the dated pages of this codex: the chronicles, the guides and anything that has to be right about a number. She came to slots sideways, out of nine years of writing about consumer finance in Ōtautahi Christchurch, and she has kept the habit that came with it — a suspicion of any figure quoted without its source.
Everything under chronicles and guides: the rankings drawn out of the register, the histories of the long knight lines, and the plain explainers. She does not write the slot and casino reviews — those are Callum Rees's work, and the two hands are kept apart deliberately so that neither ends up marking the other's homework.
Every figure in a Marnie piece comes out of the register, and the register comes out of what the workshops published. Where a workshop published nothing, her articles say so in the sentence rather than in a footnote. She writes the caveat before the claim, which makes for slower prose and fewer corrections.
If something here is wrong, it gets fixed and the fix gets noted. The postbag is the way in.
