01The chronicle opens

Entered into the roll on 27 February 2025, Black Knight Evolution is a five-reel pokie from Light & Wonder — a modern re-forging of the studio's veteran Black Knight escutcheon, now dressed in circuitry and cold blue light.

This is a Mighty Ways build: my run opened on 243 ways, with a banner promising the reels may randomly expand on any spin. The pool lists a multiway ceiling of over 1,024 ways, so the grid can swell well beyond where it starts.

02Theme and atmosphere

The charge is a helmeted black knight glaring out from the top of the reels, set against a humming purple circuit board — the 'evolution' of the title is the old fantasy knight rebooted as something half-machine.

The paying charges are a curious mix: glowing card-suit gems in red, blue, purple and pink for the lows, a green flanged mace and a banded golden orb for the highs. It is loud and electric where the older game was gothic, and it will divide players who loved the original's darker mood.

03How the game is played

Wins muster left to right on the Mighty Ways pattern, so any matching charges on adjacent reels can pay regardless of row. My bet sat at $1.00 a spin on a demo balance of $1,000.

The gold knight's-head shield is the standout charge, landing framed on the middle reel in my run. A Gamble toggle (switched off in my session) offers a double-or-nothing on wins, and a Premium Play switch to the left points to an enhanced, higher-cost bet mode.

The engine here is the expanding grid: 'reels may randomly expand on any spin', pushing the ways count upward toward that four-figure ceiling and, with it, the number of ways to connect a win. The pool also lists free spins, a reelset-changing mechanic and a bonus bet.

I should be straight with you: my demo run stayed in the base game and did not trigger the free spins, so I cannot describe that round first-hand. What I can vouch for is the ways-expansion tease, which fired the banner repeatedly without lifting me to a full 1,024.
