Knights of the Gridiron, blazoned by qora, drops an American-football locker room into a medieval tourney field, complete with a wild pigskin, a spiked-helmet scatter and a peckish baby dragon collecting your wilds. I ran my own demo at a 2.00 stake; the shots below are from that session.

Knights of the Gridiron, read closely

01The chronicle opens

ntered into the roll on 15 August 2025, Knights of the Gridiron is a five-reel, three-row pokie from qora — a cheerful mash-up that dresses gridiron players as tournament knights and hangs a four-tier jackpot ladder across the top of the reels.

The frame is a medieval stadium: timber stands packed with a painted crowd, snowy awnings, and heraldic banners flapping over what is plainly a football field. A little blue dragon perches to the left as the game's mascot.

02Theme and atmosphere

The paying charges split cleanly. The lows are royals A, K, Q, J and 10 stamped on battered shields; the premiums are the players — a bearded quarterback in a number 12 jersey, a helmeted number 5 framed in a purple star, a whistle-blowing referee and a cowboy-hatted coach.

The wild is a laced brown football, and the scatter is a red spiked helmet marked SCATTER. It is bright, busy and knowingly daft — qora leans into the joke rather than apologising for it, and the little dragon selling the 'collect more wilds' story gives it charm.

03How the game is played

Spins play across the five-by-three grid; my stake sat at 2.00 with a demo balance starting at 998. The football wild substitutes for the paying charges, and the on-screen prompts nudged me to keep collecting wilds — 'the Dragon's hunger grows!'

A Bonus Buy shield sits at the lower left for players who want to purchase the feature outright, and a Quick Spin toggle offers a faster game if you would rather not wait between spins.

04Bonus features

The trigger is spelled out on the reels: land 3 scatters to trigger the free spins. In my run I twice landed two spiked-helmet scatters, one short of the round, with the game teasing the third. The dragon's wild-collection mechanic ties into the feature, hoarding wilds toward bigger hits.

Above the reels sits a four-tier jackpot ladder — Mini, Minor, Major and Grand — offering fixed prizes on top of the line pays. I should be straight: my demo didn't land the third scatter or a jackpot, so I'm describing the triggers rather than a bonus round I saw through to the end.

05RTP, volatility and max win

The pool lists the return at 96%, right around the benchmark, which is a fair shake. The jackpot ladder I read showed a Grand of 2,000.00, a Major of 200.00, a Minor of 100.00 and a Mini of 60.00 as the on-reel prize values.

Volatility is marked medium-high, and the top prize is 1,288× stake — modest by knight-pokie standards, so the jackpot tiers are doing real work at the top end. My own spins were quiet, with a small 0.24 win the highlight of the base game.

06Who it suits

This suits players who enjoy a light, novelty theme with a clear collect-the-wilds hook, a jackpot ladder and a Bonus Buy for the impatient — the football-knight gag is good fun and the 96% return is honest.

If you want a big max-win ceiling, that 1,288× top will feel low. Whatever you choose, set a limit before you kick off and treat it as entertainment — if the pokies stop being fun, take a spell. Free, confidential support is at safergambling.org.nz and the Gambling Helpline on 0800 654 655. 18+.

07The blazon in brief

A fun, well-made novelty pokie with a fair 96% return, a wild-collection hook and a four-tier jackpot ladder — held back only by a modest 1,288× top win. I enter it in the chronicle at 7 out of 10.

Rules of the game

Grid

Five reels, three rows. Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels with royals as lows and gridiron players as premiums.

Wild

The laced brown football is the wild and substitutes for the paying charges; the game encourages collecting wilds via the dragon mascot.

Scatter and free spins

The red spiked-helmet SCATTER triggers the free spins; the reels state you need to land 3 scatters to start the round.

Jackpot ladder

A four-tier ladder over the reels — Mini, Minor, Major and Grand — showed on-reel values of 60.00, 100.00, 200.00 and 2,000.00 in my run.

Bonus Buy

A Bonus Buy shield lets you purchase the feature directly, and a Quick Spin toggle speeds up play.

The pay panel frames I captured were covered by a Quick Spin prompt, so I could not read the per-symbol line pays — those rows are entered after the session. The real numbers I could read are the four jackpot-ladder values and my own base-game win of 0.24 at a 2.00 stake.

How the chronicler rides it

The chronicler has ridden this knight. The plates below are frames from that session — our own screen, nothing borrowed.

Base game at a 2.00 stake: royal shields and a spiked-helmet SCATTER on reel two, a football wild blurring in and the dragon urging 'collect more Wilds!', with the Grand 2,000.00 jackpot hanging overhead.

A small 0.24 hit off my 2.00 spin flagged as a 'Legendary Victory' — two spiked-helmet scatters land on reels two and four, one short of the free-spins trigger.

Summa

The verdict

In its favour

Against it

  • Modest 1,288x maximum win
  • Medium-high volatility with quiet base-game stretches
  • Symbol pay values weren't readable behind the Quick Spin prompt
  • Novelty theme won't suit players wanting serious chivalry
