Knight Gambit, read closely

01The chronicle opens

ntered into the roll on 11 May 2022, Knight Gambit is a five-reel, three-row pokie from Triple Profits Games, set at the walls of a burning castle with two stone knight-statues standing sentinel either side of the reels.

It plays fifty lines; my run set the bet-per-line at 0.10 for a 2.50 total. Across the top of the reels hang four red jackpot banners — GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR and MINI — which tells you where the studio wants your eye to go.

02Theme and atmosphere

The charge is war material: a plumed knight, a round shield, a war-axe, a spiked flail and a crossbow, over royals K, Q, J, A and 10 rendered in blood-red gothic script. The backdrop is a dusk siege, walls aflame, an army massing on the plain.

It is a darker, grittier medieval skin than most of the knights in this chronicle — less royal pageantry, more battlefield. The stone sentinels flanking the reels are a nice touch that sells the siege.

03How the game is played

Wins muster left to right across the fifty lines. In my run at a 2.50 bet the base pays were modest — a war-axe line paid 2.00, roughly matching the stake back. The plumed knight is the wild, printed with WILD, and it lit the leftmost reel on my better spins.

The real structure sits above and beside the reels: the jackpot ladder up top and a gold-coin hold-and-win button glowing at the bottom right, ready to launch the game's headline feature.

04Bonus features

The engine is a Hold and Win round — the collect-and-respin coin feature the jackpot ladder feeds into. Landing enough coin symbols locks them and grants respins, and filling positions can award one of the four fixed jackpots: GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR or MINI.

In my run the ladder read GRAND 200.00, MAJOR 25.00, MINOR 5.00 and MINI 1.00 above the reels — the actual jackpot values on display. The pool also lists a Free Spins round with additional free spins and a scatter to open it. I did not trigger the hold-and-win in my demo, so I will not invent how it paid.

05RTP, volatility and max win

The pool lists the return at 95%, which sits a full point-and-a-half below the common benchmark — on the stingy side, and worth knowing before you play. The volatility is not listed in the pool, so I will not guess at it; the hold-and-win structure usually points to a spikier ride, but I am not going to state what the data does not.

The maximum win is also not listed in the pool for this game. The only hard ceiling I can point to is the GRAND jackpot value shown on the banner, which read 200.00 in my run.

06Who it suits

This suits players who like a hold-and-win coin feature with a laddered jackpot and a grittier battlefield skin. If chasing GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR and MINI tiers is your idea of a good time, it delivers that structure.

If you weigh return-to-player closely, the 95% figure is a mark against it, and the missing max-win and volatility data mean you are going in with less to work from than usual. Set a limit before you muster in and treat it as entertainment. Free, confidential support is at safergambling.org.nz and the Gambling Helpline on 0800 654 655. 18+.

07The blazon in brief

A gritty siege pokie built around a hold-and-win coin feature and a four-tier jackpot ladder. The structure is clear and the art sells the battlefield, but a 95% return and missing max-win data hold it back. I enter it in the chronicle at 5 out of 10.

Rules of the game

Grid and lines

Five reels, three rows, fifty paylines. My run played 0.10 per line for a 2.50 total bet, with wins paying left to right.

Wild

The plumed knight marked WILD substitutes for the paying charges. It lit the leftmost reel on my better spins.

Hold and Win

Coin symbols lock in place and grant respins; filling positions can award one of the four fixed jackpots. The gold-coin button at the bottom right launches the feature.

Jackpot ladder

Four fixed tiers hang above the reels. In my run they read GRAND 200.00, MAJOR 25.00, MINOR 5.00 and MINI 1.00 — the values on display during play.

Free spins

The pool lists a Free Spins round with additional free spins, opened by a scatter. I did not trigger it in my demo session.

No per-symbol pay panel was shown in my run. The real numbers are the jackpot ladder values displayed above the reels (GRAND 200.00, MAJOR 25.00, MINOR 5.00, MINI 1.00) and a base line that paid 2.00 at a 2.50 bet. The pool lists no maximum win, so I am not quoting one. Symbol multipliers are entered after the session.

How the chronicler rides it

The chronicler has ridden this knight. The plates below are frames from that session — our own screen, nothing borrowed.

base gameKnight Gambit — base game
Base game at 50 lines for a 2.50 bet: red gothic royals and a crossbow on the reels, the stone knight-statues standing guard, and the GRAND/MAJOR/MINOR/MINI jackpot banners across the top.

Captured in our own session. Where a round has not been reached yet, the codex shows an honest blank rather than a borrowed picture.

Summa

The verdict

In its favour

  • Clear hold-and-win coin feature with a four-tier jackpot ladder
  • Gritty, well-drawn siege presentation with stone sentinels
  • Fifty lines and a low bet-per-line make it flexible to stake
  • Free spins round listed on top of the coin feature

Against it

  • Below-benchmark 95% return
  • No maximum win listed in the pool data
  • Volatility not listed, so the ride is hard to judge in advance
  • Base game ran thin in my demo session
5
of 10

A gritty siege pokie built around a hold-and-win coin feature and a laddered jackpot, let down by a 95% return and missing max-win and volatility data. The structure is sound but the numbers ask for caution. Set your limit before you muster in — support is at safergambling.org.nz and 0800 654 655. 18+.

Frequent questions

What is the RTP of Knight Gambit?
The pool lists 95%, which sits below the common benchmark for online pokies — worth knowing before you play.

The pool does not list a maximum win for this game, so I am not going to quote one. The GRAND jackpot banner read 200.00 in my run.

A Hold and Win coin round: coin symbols lock and grant respins, and filling positions can award one of four fixed jackpots — GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR or MINI.
